I haven’t read a lot lately, no time shocking I know! I have a few good books on my kindle ready to rock though. Tanners Dell by the queen of horror S. E. England ( I am still sleeping with a night light since reading Father of lies). I reviewd Father of Lies  a few months back and interviewed the lady herself. she is a sweet heart! So please flick back a few pages and check those out.  I also have the final installment in the trillogy ready, Magda. If i am not a jibbering wreck after Tanners Dell that is!

Also big squishy congratulations to Phil Price for landing a publishing deal! And the re-release of Unknown! Not only that his next book is almost ready for release so I shall of course be reading , reviewing and interviewing the man himself. The Turning is coming soon!

On the writing front for me… well… I have been working on and off on a book for a while ( mostly off lately!) so I am hoping to get that all up and running again. plus I have a few ideas kicking about so I really do need to get my butt to the computer and get imagining.

In the mean time here is the cover for The Turning by Phil Price and the revamped one for Unknown, they are awesome!

4.5⭐️

Being a huge fan of James Herbert and Cheryl Bradshaw and Allie Harrison I was looking forward to reading this scary tale . It took me a while to get into the book, the opening was very good and gave me the feel of what was to come. I good horror needs to get this right from the first few pages and I believe the author managed this brilliantly. A few chapters in and I started to get lost a bit, the idea of jumping between different charterers stories and time was inspired , however at times is was just slightly fragmented. I wonder if  a few marked scene changes would have cleaned up the sometimes blurred lines of when and where the reader is in the book .  Having said that the story is just great. the characters are well established with plenty of back story .

Around the half way mark I felt the tale really started to come into itself and I had a good idea of how the different characters  intertwined. by the last quarter I couldn’t put the book down. It picked up pace and I really got the sense of suspense.

The writing style works perfectly for a book of this genre, the author flirts with the reader. building them up with chilling descriptions and quiet frankly disturbing horror. I am not ashamed to say that during my time reading Father of Lies I installed a plug in night light. In my opinion what makes this book so scary was it got to me on a physiological level. It was in what the author didn’t write that made it frightening. In writing horror I believe sometimes less is more, and the way the author has written this was exactly how i love my horror. Enough to rise my heartbeat and built the tension , with some awesome descriptive writing , while leaving the reader to imagine the rest. like in classic  horror movies like psycho its the unseen that makes it so frightening.

In conclusion,  A bit fragmented at the start but that didn’t detract too much from what is a very gripping, spin chilling horror. I know this is part of a trilogy and I will be putting myself through more nights sleeping with the light on to find out exactly how this story ends.

Bourbon Street Heat. By Beth Hale

unnamed

Reeling from a recent breakup, Santana flees to New Orleans and the comfort of her best friend. Once there, she’s encouraged to explore BDSM, a world she’s always fantasized about but has been too afraid to try.

She meets Graham and is soon his eager pupil, delving deeper into her role as a sub and revelling in the new, satisfying experiences.

When Michael shows up to rekindle their romance, Santana realizes she still loves him. But there is more at stake now, because Santana knows she has discovered who she really is.

Can Michael accept the new her? Will he agree to a relationship that includes the BDSM world? Or will Santana have to let him go in order to remain true to herself?

 5 STARS

Firstly, this is the most detailed novella I have ever read. The story comes to life right away and I was quickly immersed in Santana’s girly get away.  Santana is a great character, I really liked her. The reason for her being in New Orleans was totally relatable, I think every girl who has been through a breakup wants to grab a bag and go hang out with their best friend for a while.  The relationship between Santana and her best friend reminded me so much of some of the antics I got up to with my girlfriends that I found myself smiling a lot of the time.

I don’t read a lot of BDSM it’s usually not my thing, however, I found this title to have the perfect balance of a love story /breakup and exploring this other side of sex.  The scenes were well written and realistic which I think is a real accomplishment when writing sex scenes, so many are over the top. I really Adore Grahams character he is so down to earth and honest about exactly what he expects. I am sure guys like him actually exist. Another great thing about the book is that I can tell the author has taken a lot of time to ensure that this is a believable fantasy, I am sure some research was involved to be able to strike the perfect balance of relatability and naughty fantasy. I found myself totally engrossed in their world. To me that is the sign of a great piece of writing.

Santana’s ex Michael is portrayed beautifully, the way a man behaves when he has broken it off with a woman was all there. I enjoyed watching this part of the story unfold. I loved the whole will they won’t they aspect.  to find out more you will need to read the book, I don’t want to spoil it for potential readers.

As it is a novella the story does move along a lot faster than in a full-length novel. I didn’t feel that it lost anything being this short. It is a very well written, detailed story that held my attention from page one right till the end.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a love story. If you have never read a book covering this particular subject, then Bourbon Street Heat is the perfect book for you.

In conclusion, A great book with some believable characters. The plot is brilliant and the exclusion flawless. Perfectly lovely, yet wickedly naughty.  A must read.

REVIEW Jayded, Dark and light Book 1. By Gideon

41sctaex46l

Searching for Heaven but living in Hell. This was Jay`s life, he had been gifted since birth. He carried the gift of foresight, he could communicate with those beyond this mortal realm. He was the one that could do, what no other could. This gift carried a very high price though. It was slowly killing him, pushing him to the very edges of his sanity. He was destined to help his fellow man, to only serve the divine. But one by one people close to him started dying. The darkness was coming and all that stood before it was Jay, a member of the celestial choir and some very short-tempered dog soldiers. In a game of chicken between the universe and these four, you would have to wonder who would blink first. The light will continue to shine, whatever the cost may be.

3.5 STARS

This book was one of the more unusual titles I have read. The author has a very interesting imagination.  The story is about a man named Jay who is troubled with visions and doesn’t quite know his place in the world.  It is only have a serious life event that Jay truly comes to understand and accept his calling upon Earth.

The story is set at a good pace with a few characters but the ones that are in the story are strong and fully developed.  I would have liked to have found out more about Jays back story and also that of the female lead. To give that richness.  The way the author has been able to tackle such a interesting subject is commendable. I find the areas that are covered very interesting. It has a slight Constantine edge about it which i liked.

The language is good if in some places repetitive. I am aware this is book one in a series and I felt the ending lent itself perfectly for the next book. In my opinion this is book would not work as a stand alone due to the ending, although the author has been very clever with the ending; it makes you want  to find out what happens next!

In conclusion, I found the topic engaging and the writing good. slightly repetitive in places but nothing that hugely detracts from the story. Great characters and a brilliant leading ending. Very well written to set up the second book in this series.

I give Jayded 3.5 stars.

REVIEW Dance of Shadows, By Yelena Black

images

Dancing with someone is an act of trust. Elegant and intimate; you’re close enough to kiss, close enough to feel your partner’s heartbeat. But for Vanessa, dance is deadly – and she must be very careful who she trusts . . .

Vanessa Adler attends an elite ballet school – the same one her older sister, Margaret, attended before she disappeared. Vanessa feels she can never live up to her sister’s shining reputation. But Vanessa, with her glorious red hair and fair skin, has a kind of power when she dances – she loses herself in the music, breathes different air, and the world around her turns to flames . . .

Soon she attracts the attention of three men: gorgeous Zep, mysterious Justin, and the great, enigmatic choreographer Josef Zhalkovsky. When Josef asks Vanessa to dance the lead in the Firebird, she has little idea of the danger that lies ahead – and the burning forces about to be unleashed . . .

4  STARS

I came across this title at the public library and found the cover really eye catching.  i must confess that on this occasion I did not read the blurb , which is unusual for me as I like to have some idea of what the story is about.

The story unfolds quite slowly with Vanessa Alder starting her freshman year at the New York Ballet Academy , three years after his sister Margaret dissipated in her own freshman year.  Which is Vanessa’s main focus to attending the best Ballet school in the USA.  However,  Vanessa is more than she seems, strange things happen when she dances.

Vanessa is a very relate-able girl, I enjoyed how the author created a complete world in which you could, as a reader fully believe to be real.  I have no dance  back ground but I found it very easy to follow the story and enjoy this new world of ballet. It takes a while to get into the main theme of the story , which I really didn’t mind as it gently drew me into Vanessa’s world. At no point was I bored or confused by the direction the author was leading me .

It isn’t until the last quarter of the book that things really start to come together. Subtle hints are given through out the second half of the book, which I found built up the suspense. Having said that, most of the sinister characters are easy to spot;  But be prepared for some surprise twists. These really added an edge to the last part of the book. The pace increases and I found myself unable to put it down until I knew how things ended.

The ending was well written, I don’t want to spoil it for potential readers . All I will say is, it is worth the read and you might get more then you expected. Over all it is a really enjoyable young adult book with some fantastic characters and plot twists that just keep you turning  those pages.

Since completing the title I have looked online to purchase my own copy  and have discovered that it is quite an old title, you can however still get paper copies of the book; although it is sadly no longer available on kindle. There is another book in the series available as well.

REVIEW. Nameless, By Helen J Barnes

30318855

Addison is a typical teen, who worries only about the relatively insignificant things in life like; college, friends, boy bands and passing her driving test.

Little does Addy know, life is about to put her to the test when she becomes the object of an addiction, an infatuation and an obsession on a level she cannot begin to comprehend.
As the weather turns frosty and the icy season draws in Addison finds that, someone she assumed to be a relatively innocent secret admirer, is taking things to the next level and their thoughts are colder, darker and more sinister than the freezing winter nights.
But how do you stop a faceless, nameless stalker when even authorities can’t find the culprit?
CONTAINS SCENES OF A DISTURBING, ADULT THEME. READERS SHOULD BE 18+ YEARS

4 Stars

I really enjoyed this book, It was well written and engaging. The characters are relate-able  and true to life. I especially liked the female lead Addy, she  come across as both strong and vulnerable.

The Story is quite dark and the subject matter ma not be for everyone, however I found it sensitively written. To  be able to write something so harrowing without making it into a  an uncomfortable read is a real skill. It is a book that keeps you wondering until the end, I was very pleased to find that I had trouble guessing who the sinister character was as it kept me reading.

There was only one aspect of the book that I found disappointing and that was the screen shots of the Facebook messages. now, I read this book on my kindle paper white so maybe that is the issue. Having said that when I enlarged the font size in the hopes to read the images they sadly remained the same size.

Over all it is a great example of the genre and I would read it again.

REVIEW The Nephilim Brood, By Michael K. Paraiso

images

Shane Connell along with 144,000 other people are abducted by aliens. They believe that they have been kept in stasis and brought to the aliens home planet.Only they find out that their not on a planet at all, but aboard an enormous terrarium star-ship, with an environment almost identical to Earth.

They also learn that their alien captors are actually highly evolved humans; on a rescue mission to save them from impending disaster. There’s a humongous asteroid on a collision course with Earth. Their mission is to transport a diverse segment of the earth human population to a new home planet in a galaxy 389 years away.

However, evolution has taken a terrible wrong turn on this new planet and humanity has split into  two separate species. One species are pre-Neanderthal carnivores. The others are normal humans as nature intended, the carnivore creatures will eventually render the native humans extinct. So a third species, a small select group of earth humans that will include Shane Connell, will be sent through a wormhole hundreds of years in advance on a mission to try and right this evolutionary wrong.

They are the Nephilim Brood…

Shane rescues Lashena, a beautiful native woman from certain death at the hands of the carnivorous creatures. they spend time living together in erotic bliss and fall madly in love. Shane discovers a deadly poisonous plant and teaches the natives archery and the art of the poisonous booby trap. He then enlists the help of the earth humans. Heavily outnumbered, against all odds and after many hard fought battles they finally defeat the bloodthirsty creatures in an epic battle of the ages.

3.5 STARS

This book held so much promise int the beginning, I loved how much detail there is describing the star ship and the complexity of the characters . I could clearly picture the scenes in my head. I really like Shane Connell, his character is strong and has a great presence. I could tell early on that he would make a great leader. The cross section of the human race that are the main focus in the first half of the book are very well-developed and totally believable. The interactions are great and really give the reader a true insight into how we interact with each other when thrown together in an unknown situation.

The mixture of biblical references and SCI-FI is an interesting one that surprisingly works very well. I have studied the Bible and found that the author had really researched for this title. For me it added that extra element and I believe that this book is still mainstream enough to appeal to a wide audience.

The story sets a good pace, the introduction of the native tribe starting with Lashena was gripping and very well thought out, I could tell this story was going to just get better and better. Sadly it didn’t turn out that way.  The second half of the book is very repetitive, I found myself becoming a bit put off.  The battles were truly epic in scale and detailed, however, I think this section could have been streamlined or maybe changed up the language slightly to keep the reader hooked.

In conclusion, it is a good SCI-FI with a Biblical twist. An amazing cast and some truly amazing descriptive writing in places. For me the only thing that places this book as good and not great is the second half. Overall an eye-opening read that really gets you thinking about what it means to be Human.
